Write On Boomtown

Teachers! Here are seven, fun reading and writing assignments you can give to your students based on Boomtown, by Nowen N. Particular.

Five Reasons I Want to Move to Boomtown
Have your student read Boomtown and then write a 1 page essay entitled "5 Reasons I Want to Move to Boomtown". Give extra credit if they include a drawing inspired by the book.

Strange History
Have students discover an obscure, strange, otherwise unknown historical event or person and give their report in class. For instance, find out what else was happening in the world in May of 1884, the month Boomtown was founded.

Boomtown Vocabulary
Use vocabulary words from the book for spelling tests.

Mystery Letter
Have students write a “mysterious” letter (like Chang’s letter in chapter 10) that includes clues. Have each student read their letter and the other students have to try and guess the mystery.

Hopontop Dictionary
Have students come up with 50 Hopontop Indian words and their translation—start your own Hopontop dictionary!

Tall Tale
Have students write their own “tall tale” about a Boomtown resident, or make up a character of their own.

Social Studies Assignment
Allow students to pick one of the 20 different Charter Principles (see the Boomtown Charter) and write a 1-page essay on the subject of their choice.

5 Reasons I Want to
Move to Boomtown
by Chandra Banks, 3rd grade

I live in a big city, so we don't have any farms or cows or other animals nearby except at the zoo. So the biggest reason I want to move to Boomtown is because it's a small town with lots of farms and animals.

The second biggest reason is because they have fireworks all the time. When a new family moves to Boomtown they get a 150 pound box of fireworks and all the kids go to Chang Park to shoot them off.

The third reason I want to move to Boomtown is because of the museum where they have the Steam Car Races. Kids get to race the cars for free whenever they want. They also have a swing chair in the Conservatory and a lot of other fun inventions.

The fourth reason is because it snows a lot in winter. We don't ever get snow where I live. They have a "Slippery Slope" where all the kids go sledding and the Slush Olympics. It sounds like lots of fun!

The last reason I want to move to Boomtown is because of the Hopontop Traveling Circus. I want to see them do all their amazing tricks.
